A quartet of interactions.

چکیده

When people practice specific tasks –such as playing video games or speaking a second language– does this boost their general cognitive abilities? To what extent are our basic cognitive processes malleable? Are we to accept the hand that nature has dealt us –a short attention span, a fallible memory, a limited perceptual system– or is there hope that, with the right training and dogged persistence, we can grease the cogwheels of our cognitive machinery, improving performance beyond its apparent boundaries? These questions lie at the heart of a nature versus nurture dilemma that has recently manifested itself in at least three different paradigms. In the “brain training” paradigm, researchers study whether training on specific memory tasks results in transfer and helps increase the overall effectiveness of human working memory (e.g., Jaeggi, Buschkuehl, Jonides, & Shah, 2011; but see Shipstead, Redick, & Engle, 2012); in the “video gaming” paradigm, researchers study whether playing violent video games leads to improvements in visual perception (e.g., Bejjanki et al., 2014; but see van Ravenzwaaij, Boekel, Forstmann, Ratcliff, & Wagenmakers, 2014); finally, in the “bilingual” paradigm, researchers study whether people who speak a second language display better executive functioning – for instance, bilinguals are presumed to be relatively good in suppressing irrelevant information (e.g., Bialystok, Craik, & Luk, 2012; but see Hilchey, Saint-Aubin, & Klein, in press). All three paradigms face similar challenges: they require an enormous investment of resources –training people in memory tasks or video games, finding a matched set of bilingual and monolingual participants–, they present a myriad of ways in which a positive result can arise from confounds or contaminations, and they are beset by packs of skeptics and detractors who argue that the positive results are entirely spurious. The article under discussion represents the most recent volley on the part of the skeptics (Paap, Johnson, & Sawi, in press). The arguments by Paap et al. (in press) are

A novel case of quartet tumor: meningioma, angiomyolipoma, ependymoma and sarcoma: report of a case and review of the literature

Multiple primary tumors in a single patient are relatively rare when four or more distinct lesions are considered. Herein, we report a case of woman with four different primary tumors: meningioma, renal angiomyolipoma, spinal ependymoma and high-grade soft tissue sarcoma. There was no family history and hereditary syndrome. The genetic analysis was completely normal. To best of our knowledge, t...

An ab initio quantum chemical investigation of TOMS nmr SHIELDING TENSORS IN Adenine-thymine, Adenine-uracil, Guanine-Cytosine & uracil-quartet: comparison between theoretical and experimental results

We have evaluated the NMR shielding tensors for A:T,G:C,A:U in Watson-crick, and U-quartet. We have computed NMR shielding tensors at B31YP level by using 6-31G(d) basis set. We have compute anisotropy and asymmetry in A:T,G:C,A:U and U-quartet. The NMR shielding tensors were calculated using the GIAO method. The natural bonding orbital analysis (NBO) were performed. NBO calculation have been ...

Porphyrin-templated synthetic G-quartet (PorphySQ): a second prototype of G-quartet-based G-quadruplex ligand.

Template-assembled synthetic G-quartet (TASQ) has been reported recently as a G-quadruplex ligand interacting with DNA according to an unprecedented, nature-inspired 'like likes like' approach, based on the association between two G-quartets, one being native (quadruplex) and the other one artificial (ligand). Herein, a novel TASQ-based ligand is designed, synthesized and its quadruplex-recogni...

Interactions of the G quartet forming semaphorin 3F RNA with the RGG box domain of the fragile X protein family

Fragile X syndrome, the most common cause of inherited mental retardation, is caused by the transcriptional silencing of the fmr1 gene due to an unstable expansion of a CGG trinucleotide repeat and its subsequent hypermethylation in its 5' UTR. This gene encodes for the fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP), an RNA-binding protein that has been shown to use its RGG box domain to bind to G...

Hybridization effects and multipole orders in Pr skutterudites

Theoretical account is given of 4f-electron dynamics and multipole orders in Pr skutterudites with particular attention to (i) mechanism of the crystalline electric field (CEF) splitting leading to a pseudo-quartet ground state; (ii) Kondo effect due to exchange interactions involving the pseudo-quartet; (iii) multipole orders in the lattice of the pseudo-quartet in magnetic field. Competition ...
